I have purchased many books from classics to cooking to preparing salads to history to read on my travels so that I can enjoy reading books that I enjoy reading. I am very happy with this purchase.

This was a good book to read if you did not grow up in the Netherlands but moved there later in life. It makes some sense out of some sayings that you might hear or let's you know where some stories come from. Some of these stories are more interesting than others.
Reading stories about the tales from other cultures is always an exciting time for my imagination. It is nice to have folks that will take the time to make this books of information available to all of us if we so choose to read them.
I read it because I am Dutch and I am visiting the Netherlands next spring. The book is okay, but there is much better children's literature out there.
The stories are delightfully written, the images wonderfully escapist. And it is difficult to find collections from Holland in English.
But the stories reflect the sensibilities of children from the author's era. They lack the high drama of earlier French and German tales. nevertheless, if you specifically need Dutch tales, this volume fits the bill and is enjoyable.
There is a really interesting mix here. Ancient myth, medieval and old-time folktales. Flax stories, and the odd standard fairy tale. Mind you it's told in an English forced-to-fit style, but it's enjoyable.
